Meritorious Service Medal (MSM): The MSM recognizes meritorious service on the basis of a single, particularly important achievement; a career notable for accomplishments in technical or professional fields; or unusually high quality and initiative in leadership.

The medal (pictured above) is awarded for noncombat meritorious achievement or service that is incontestably exceptional and of magnitude that clearly places the individual above his peers while serving in one of the assignments for which the medal has been designated.

Meritorious Promotions to Corporal and Sergeant

A Commander can meritoriously promote a Marine to Cpl or Sgt if they believe that Marine has shown outstanding leadership and performance. There are quarterly promotion boards held in December, March, June, and September.

The unit must display such outstanding devotion and superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks as to set it apart and above other units with similar missions. The degree of achievement required is the same as that which would warrant award of the Legion of Merit.
