Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Boone-Wells Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ferguson was a Choctaw County native and grew up in Leland where she attended Leland High and earned her master's degree from Delta State University. She also received a specialist degree from the University of Mississippi. Mrs. Ferguson was a longtime teacher and administrator in Greenville, Senatobia and Tate County Mississippi schools.

She served as principal of Strayhom Elementary and Matty Akin Elementary. She was federal programs director and associate superintendent of Greenville Public Schools. Mrs. Ferguson instituted many programs, including the Pre-K program in Greenville Public Schools, designed to help students reach their potential. She was a member of Mississippi Association of Educators, Mississippi Association of School Administrators, Mississippi Association of Federal Education Program Directors, Mississippi Educational Computing Association, Mississippi Reading Association, Mississippi Association for Supervision and Development, Mississippi Early Childhood Association and American Association of University Women.

She was a member of Woodmen of the World and served as secretary of her loyal lodge and a member of the North Mississippi Emmaus community. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. "During her years as an educator, she saw many changes in the public schools of Mississippi," said her husband, Travis. "But, she continued to strive for excellence in education and always insisted on the worth of each individual student." Other survivors include: daughters, Alice Shirey Vanderford of Hernando, Chery Johnson of Matthews, N.C., Gaye Thomas of Trinity, N.C., Tanya Ferguson of Greenville and Jan Ferguson of Denver; sons, James Shirey Jr. of Hemando and Travis Ferguson Jr.

of Batesville; mother, Alice Portwood Neal of Greenville; brother, Fred Lee Neal Jr. of Greenville; and 11 grandchildren. Bessie Jennie Bardwell cashier BRANDON Bessie Jennie Bardwell, 95, a cashier, died of respiratory failure Saturday at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
